Well Drilling Cost in Missouri

Missouri is split between the Ozark Plateau in the south (limestone karst with excellent springs and wells) and glaciated plains in the north. Both regions have good groundwater but different drilling characteristics.

Ozarks vs Northern Missouri
Ozark Plateau (south-central MO): Limestone and dolomite aquifers, 100–250 feet, generally productive at $25–$45/ft. Northern Missouri glaciated plains: Glacial drift wells at 80–200 feet, $22–$40/ft. Southeast Missouri (Bootheel): Alluvial aquifer, very shallow at 50–100 feet and highly productive.
Missouri DNR Regulations
Missouri wells are regulated by DNR under Chapter 256 RSMo. Licensed driller required. Well construction permit required. Completion report must be filed. Minimum 50-foot setback from septic.
Common Questions
Missouri residential wells typically cost $6,500–$14,000 installed. The Ozarks region produces excellent water quality at moderate depth and cost. Northern Missouri is also affordable.
Natural springs come from groundwater emerging at the surface — the same aquifer that wells tap. The Ozark aquifer produces excellent quality water known for clarity and low mineral content.
